In some inland post feel their savagery, the utter savagery, had closed round him-- all that mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the forest, in the jungles, in the heart of wild men. There's no initiation into either such mysteries. He has to live in the midst of the incomprehensible, which is the detestable. And it has a fascination, too, which goes to work upon him. The fascination of the abomination--you know. Imagine the growing regrets, the longing to escape, the powerless disgust, the surrender, the hate.
Jospeph Conrad-- Heart of Darkness, Part 1.
-When an individual lives in the wilderness for so long, they lose a sense of themselves
RépondreEffacer-Savagery is inside of you but is often hidden and kept inside because of the rules of society
-In the novel, the boys felt disgusted with themselves and could not believe what they had done (once the naval officer approached them, the boys were pulled back to reality)
(Ralph's tribe)
EffacerThis is for Jack's tribe. The quote explains that there is an evil that is hidden in everyone, and that it is kept secret because of society's standards. The quote also states that when a man is isolated from society, it becomes harder for him to keep that savagery hidden. So, this quote relates to the general behavior of the boys on the island, which was on a constant decline because of their separation with civilization.
RépondreEffacerSimon's Tribe: People are born savage, and are taught how to be civilised (ex: we teach manners, not to kill... etc.) When someone goes away from society for long enough, they forget what they were taught, and go back to their instinct, savagery. "If you don't use it, you lose it!"
RépondreEffacerSavagery represents Jack's tribe and Ralph is the only one that stayed in control. Ralph has to live in the middle of all these savages. But he also has to live with the fact that they helped to murder Simon which is a regretful event. Savagery is bigger than all of them so it will catch on to them one day or another. Jack's tribe was infected by savagery earlier than the others.
